About the Play
The CHERALACHARITHAM is the independent play of Vinoy Thomas’s novel ‘Karikkottakkari’. The story of the converted dalit Christians during the flee from the south to the north; along with the history of the Cheran is a historical survey of Kerala.The story of the kings who planted trees, the story of the kings who worked on the soil. The play begins with the racism faced by the character Eranimos, who was born black in a white Syrian Christian family. From an aristocratic family, Philip’s only son, Irani Moss, arrives at a place KARIKKOTTAKKARI where only dalit Christians live, leaving his homeland to work as a clergyman in search of his birth mystery.
There he plays the role of a clergyman. In his later journey to discover the secret of his birth, he discovers that he is a true CHRAMAN . The play ends with the realisation that his God is open sky, the vast land, the forest, the wind, the water and light beyond caste system
About the Group
Nataka Snaghom is a group of people from the rural village of Palakkad who continuously and relentlessly put their efforts for a better theater culture in the state. Few youths in early nineties driven by ardent passion to the theater started doing experimentation in rural theater scenario. This was done through learning modern theater techniques and aesthetics. Learned techniques were put into practice in various drama productions and travelled from village to village with this performance. Active discussion and criticism sessions were organized about the productions. Communication of the staged plays in the rural mass was examined and necessary modifications and changes incorporated in the future ventures. This research is continuing now. The group bagged several awards like the best play in the state in Keralolsavam (Youth festival arranged by Kerala government) and several prizes in various drama festivals conducted the state.
About the Director
K V Sajith is an alumnus of School of Dram, Thrissur with specialisation in theatre direction. He started his career in 2005 as an actor in the play ‘Kalanhupoya chiri’, directed by Prof. S Ramanujam. During this time he became part of many theatre festivals in and out of Kerala. And he participated in ‘The Eleven Project’ under French actor cum dancer Mr. Julien. Presently he is actively involved in theatre as director and actor.
The roots of caste spread all over India and it cannot be destroying by conversion. When the silent people speak for themselves, then only roots of the caste will cut off. The play ‘Cheralachritham’ is based on the novel written by Vinoy Thomas. This is a story of a settlement village in north Kerala named ‘Karikkottakari’. A story of converted dalit christians. The play speaks about the discrimination by cast, religion, color and family. A community is trying to find their root. The play is a journey to the past through the generation and trying to shape the play in a narrative epic style.
