About the Play
This is the story about a great poet who left his artistry to become a merchant on another continent. Rimbaud in Africa questions what role art has in society. What did Rimbaud find in selling coffee and guns that his poetry could not provide? Could an answer to this question have any relevance for our lives today?
Grusomhetens create theatre with the body’s own musicality, its breath and poetry, as the beginning for all actions. With support from the Norwegian Arts Council they follow and develop Antonin Artaud’s vision of the Theatre of Cruelty.
About the Group
Theatre of Cruelty produced its first performance in collaboration with Trøndelag Theatre in 1989, and was established as a separate group in 1992. Since 2002 we have had our own stage in Hausmannsgt 34 which was established with support from the Norwegian Arts Council.
The company has performed at festivals and stages in Japan, Russia, Turkey, Germany, Poland, England, Sweden, India, France and New York. The company has in some of these places, in addition to in Ireland, also held workshops.
Theatre of Cruelty make performances within the physical tradition and retrieves basic inspiration from Antonin Artaud’s vision of an anatomical theater. We create theater with the body’s own musicality, its breath and poetry, as the beginning for all actions. Artaud wanted to awaken the inherent life force that exists in nature and that the Western man seems to have forgotten.
Theatre thus becomes a tool for real life.
We do not seek to reproduce realistic reality so it can be recognized, but to tell of the core of life inherent in every genuine experience. Although based on a dramatic work or a literary text, the written word does not have a pivotal role and is often lost in the overall stage picture.
Artistic director and founder is Lars Øyno.
About the Director
Lars Øyno is a Norwegian actor, director and playwright. He went to The Academy of Theater at the National Academy of the Arts in Norway from 1981- 84, and has worked as an actor in both film and theater for more than 30 years, from 1984 – 2017. Lars is the artistic director and founder of Grusomhetens Teater / The Theater of Cruelty, established in 1992 and with their own theater at Hausmania in Oslo from 2002. He has produced 26 performances for the company and he is touring, giving workshops and lectures nationally and internationally.
After completing his duty as a poet, Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1894) chose a controversial road in his life by becoming a businessman in Aden and Harar, Ethiopia. The business world probes under society`s anarchistic arena, and is therefore not the firsthand choice for most people. The stock- market demands some bravery.
These years in Africa are a somewhat lost chapter in Rimbaud´s life. The literary history is naturally focusing on his good poems, just like I discovered his poetry`s originality. However, it is under the sun of Africa during the last ten years of his life that his genius developed fully, and for him, a meaningful profession started. In this profession he gets precise labour: we are talking about numbers and mathematics, about science, and about feeling successful,- to reach out with one´s message, to be able to show visible and concrete results.
